This Sunday

Dear St Luke Community,

Recently I came across an article in the Christian Century Magazine titled, Practicing for the Society We Want, by Stephanie Paulsell. In the article, she reminds us that beliefs don’t guarantee behavior. We are seeing that in our society more than ever. We hear about a lot of beliefs from all sides of any given argument, but in the process of expressing beliefs, it seems people have forgotten how to behave in ways that reflect the kind of society we wish to live in. Private practices help us to cultivate and shape our public life as we carry the fruits of those practices into community.

In the article Paulsell cites the author, Timothy Snyder when she writes;

During the purges in Eastern Europe or Nazi Germany, a greeting or a handshake meant a great deal. Such gestures made those who were vulnerable to the violence of the regime feel safer. But when their neighbors averted their eyes when they met or crossed the street to avoid them, those same people felt more fearful. And with good reason. People who are isolated in society are much easier for authoritarian regimes to harm than those who are held, seen, and remembered in community. Making eye contact and exchanging greetings are practices by which we recognize each other’s humanity and knit each other into a shared life.

Barbara Brown Taylor, in her book, An Altar in the World, dedicates an entire chapter to “Encountering Others.” And in the book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, “Radical Hospitality” is at the top of the list.

We are a warm group of people within our church walls and neighborhood, but to be radical while encountering strangers is what Jesus taught and can often feel counter-intuitive.

We will explore what it means to practice loving the Stranger, encountering others and extending radical hospitality within our private lives, in order to cultivate the kind of society we all hope for.

See You Sunday,
Nicole

This Sunday - Guitar sunday

Dear St Luke Community,

We enter our second week on practicing our faith. If you missed last week and would like to listen or read you can do so by clicking this link: http://www.stlukepres.org/resources/sermons/inescapable-you/

This Sunday I will sit down for a dialogue sermon with my favorite yoga teacher to talk about the practice of Yoga as it relates to the practice of our faith life. Language so often gets in our way of understanding other traditions and I’m hoping that this dialogue will help us to learn more of how we can bridge the gap between what so many in Marin call the “spiritual but not religious.”

At the end of each class Heather ends the class by saying this…”lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu.” Translated it means, May all beings everywhere be happy and free of suffering, and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and freedom for all.

That’s a tall order, but it’s at the very core of our faith as followers of Jesus Christ. We are called not just to practice being spiritual beings in church or in a yoga studio, but to take the benefits of that practice into the world. Love God, Love others. It’s that simple but never simplistic.

Our scripture focus reflects these thoughts-

Psalm 119:73-80 (The Message)
Ephesians 4:2-5, 29-32 (NRSV)
John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

We will have a full band for guitar Sunday with lots of great music, so I encourage everyone to record the World Cup Final should it go into overtime. :)

See you Sunday,
Nicole

This Sunday

Dear St Luke Community,

We will begin a four week series on Spiritual Practices. If I learned anything this past week on vacation it’s how very grateful I am for the spiritual practice of writing a sermon. While it was nice to be relieved of the pressure for a week, I noticed a downside. I wasn’t looking and listening as much for God’s voice, God’s presence and guidance. The birds didn’t sound quite as sweet and the trees didn't dance quite as elegantly as they normally do. And that’s ok. Maybe even spiritual practices need to be interrupted to develop an appreciation.

This Sunday we will look at what it means to have a spiritual desire to live with an ever growing experience of God. And all the ways we get in our own way of allowing that to happen. Psalm 139:1-18 is titled the Inescapable God and describes beautifully God’s desire to be in an intimate relationship with us. There are a million ways we get in the way of reciprocating the same desire. I have no idea how to foster desire other than through testimony. Listen to those who walk with God and over time you’ll want some of what they’ve got. I know I do. When we stop looking at the world divided up into the material and the spiritual and see God truly in all things, in all moments, that’s when the fun begins. And by fun, I mean meaning, tears, joy, laughter as all gifted.

There’s this one quote by Buechner that every Pastor uses at least once over the course of their call. I’ve used it twice. I’m hoping three times a charm. Here it is-

If I were called upon to state in a few words the essence of everything I was trying to say both as a novelist and as a preacher, it would be something like this: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.

See you Sunday,
Nicole

P.S. Birthday Blessings this Sunday
