This Sunday

Dear St. Luke Community,

This Sunday’s scripture (Luke 16:19-31) makes us cringe on so many levels. You’ve heard it before. The poor man Lazarus, covered in sores, who day in and day out would lay at a rich man’s gate waiting for crumbs to fall his way. We assume Lazarus was invisible to the rich man because of what happens next. Maybe. Maybe the rich man saw him and chose to ignore him. Maybe the rich man wasn’t sure about what to do. Maybe he worried that if he gave the poor man money it might be spent on drugs. And maybe the idea of giving him food every day was just not feasible given his busy schedule. Maybe to see him meant coming to terms with his own wealth which made him feel ashamed that he wasn’t doing more. Maybe he didn’t like having him at his gate and was resentful there was no law preventing him from being there. Lazarus is so hard to look at. Scripture tells us the dogs would lick his sores. There is so much in this story we don’t want to see. There is so much in this world none of us want to look at. And yet to look, really look at it all, seems an impossible task.

And on that happy note, I hope to see you Sunday,
Nicole

World Communion Sunday Worship ~ Next SundayOctober 6th
Please join us for this most special blended service of acoustic and choral music. World Communion Sunday became popular during the Second World War when the country and world was in need of spiritual commitment. Through the shared bread of Christ, we are joined together as one body, unified over and above the divisive rhetoric that is pervading our nation and world. As civility and decency has been eroded from the fabric, we have a responsibility to model what it means to be followers of Christ; embracing those who are in need, standing up for what is just and right, and healing what is broken.

Men Helping to End Gun Violence ~ October 20th after worship, Bayview Room
Men Against Gun Violence was formed after the Parkland school shooting in early 2018. Eighty to ninety percent of gun violence in the U.S. is committed by men. Our mission is to build a non-partisan, non-profit group of men helping to reduce gun violence by understanding and eliminating environmental factors leading certain men to harm others and themselves.

The group was founded in Marin by L.B. Upshaw, a retired consultant and U.C. Berkeley faculty member, and former Chair of the Board of Trustees at the San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Join us after worship as L.B. speaks on “Prevent & Protect”, a program which seeks to prevent gun violence in homes, workplaces, faith communities, and schools.
