Weekly message from pastor andrew
Dear friends and family of St. Luke Presbyterian Church:
After much discernment by your faithful Pastoral Nominating Committee and prayerful consideration by each of you, the time has come for me to begin my call to serve as the pastor at St. Luke Presbyterian Church. And I am incredibly grateful and excited!
The last few days I was mediating and looking at the lectionary for inspiration for my sermon this Sunday. (My FIRST sermon as pastor… no pressure.) I was oscillating between a few suggested lectionary texts until I attended the St. Luke Bible study where I met a group of insightful women. (I highly recommend attending if you get the chance.) The group was continuing to study the story of Jesus found in the gospel of Luke. In chapter 5 Jesus is preaching from the boat when he tells a few fishermen to get back in their boats and push out into the deep waters. In these dark and deep waters, they throw their nets overboard and haul in an enormous number of fish. Enough fish to practically sink both boats. Someone offered insight they found from Beth Quick (no relation). On her website she writes, “The deep waters – there is so much there that you might never see or know it all, and you can’t touch bottom, and you have to work harder to stay afloat, but some of the most fascinating things are found in the deep water, and you have to be a strong swimmer, or a strong boater, or with someone who is strong enough for both of you, to spend a lot of time in the deep waters.”
After much discussion, I began to understand this passage with new perception. In this next chapter for us as a community we will enter deep waters together. At times those deep waters will be unknown and scary. And in those waters, we will be given an abundance of nourishment. We might feel overwhelmed and under prepared. We will be invited to step outside our comfort zone and into new ways of being the church together. And through it all, we will be accompanied by the Spirit of God. The same Spirit that was with Jesus throughout his ministry is the Spirit that partners with us.
I am delighted by this new adventure, and I look forward to getting to know each of you individually and as a community. So, let us join together in the deep waters of immense nourishment.
Peace be with you,
Andrew P. Quick
